Consulting an osteopath or a chiropractor really depends on the type of pain you have and the underlying cause. Chiropractors typically look for misalignment in joints and bones, primarily focusing on the spine, joints and the muscles. Osteopaths look more for functional limitations, osteopathy may be used to treat lower back pain, shoulder pain, arthritis or sports injuries. Osteopathy is a primary healthcare profession that focuses on diagnosing, treating, preventing, and rehabilitating musculoskeletal disorders. Osteopaths aim to restore optimal body function, often without the need for drugs or surgery. They help to remove any obstacles to the body’s healing process, aiming not only to restore function but also to prevent future pain and recurring injuries.

Before your appointment, your osteopath will have reviewed your Case History Form. During the session, they will begin by discussing your concerns and observing your movements to form a diagnosis. Osteopaths use a highly refined sense of touch, known as palpation, to examine the body.

Following this, the osteopath will propose a treatment plan and estimate the number of sessions needed. If your condition isn’t likely to respond to osteopathic treatment, they will advise you on the next steps and may refer you to a GP.

Some manual techniques, like deep tissue massage or joint manipulation, might cause mild discomfort. However, osteopaths tailor their approach to each individual’s comfort level.

Absolutely. Osteopaths encourage you to express any discomfort or concerns during the session so they can adjust their approach to ensure your comfort.

Some people may experience mild soreness, similar to the feeling after exercise. This is normal and should subside quickly. It’s recommended to stay hydrated and follow any post-treatment advice from your osteopath.

In cases of acute inflammation, trauma, or recent surgery, certain techniques may need to be adjusted. Osteopaths will adapt their treatment to accommodate any sensitivities.

Post-treatment soreness is usually brief, lasting a day or two. If it persists, you can contact your osteopath for advice. Hydration, applying ice or heat, and avoiding strenuous activities can help manage any discomfort.
